Consequences of Stress on Children's Development

When I think about the children I teach, many of them have dealt with or are currently dealing with the stressor of living in poverty.  All of my students come from low-income families, so they struggle to survive on a daily basis.  These children try to survive poverty by sometimes not eating, for their parents sometimes do not have the money and/or the resources to provide for their family.  Many of my students have parents who rely on public assistance for survival, for they do not have the accessibility to obtain other resources.  Unfortunately, this is how some of my children’s families deal with growing up poor.  At my job, my colleagues and I try to compensate the children by feeding the children breakfast, lunch, and a snack before they go home so that they can have enough food to eat.             The country that I want t...

Child Development and Public Health

The topic that I have chosen is nutrition/malnutrition.  This topic is meaningful to me because I work with young children, and I make sure they are eating a meal, whether it is breakfast and/or lunch.  Because I teach children who live in impoverished communities, there are times in which some of them may not have anything to eat at home, and eating at school is their only meal of the day.  The other times, they are eating the junk food that they brought to school.  It is tough to convince children to eat healthier when they may have the opportunity at home to do so, so I try to have my children eat a fruit and/or vegetable that is included in the meals they are given.  It is necessary for children to practice healthy eating habits when they are younger so they do not deal with health issues as they grow older.  Nutrition/malnutrition is a problem that occurs throughout the world, especially in the continent of Africa. There are many countries in Africa...

Childbirth In Your Life and Around the World

The birth that I took part in was the birth of my nephew.  The reason why this birth stands out in my mind is because my sister went through a lot for her son to be born.  I remember my sister having high blood pressure, and the doctors had to monitor her until her pressure went down.  She was then sent her home because she did not dilate enough to have the baby.  My sister made my other sister and me walk with her to help the baby come sooner because she was well overdue.  My sister was in labor for two days, and she was in so much pain.  I was upset, but excited at the same time, and finally my baby nephew was born on August 3, 2010 at 8:01 p.m.  My family, especially my mother was so excited for the newborn baby.  I chose this birth because it was the first birth that occurred in the family in a while, so we all were very excited.  Furthermore, the main thought that I have on birth and its impact on child development is that the interacti...

A Note of Thanks and Support

Peers Blog Link Denise Gibson:  https://theloveforchildren.wordpress.com Hello Denise, I want to thank you for sharing helpful resources that I can use in my classroom because they will really support me as a teacher.  I love the different resources you had about NAEYC.  They have wonderful materials that I can use to educate my young children. Also, what you said about the inspirational and motivational quote you used from Lydon B. Johnson “Education is an opportunity for young children” truly speaks to the point that all children deserve the right to an education.  The pictures you posted shows who have supported you throughout your life.  I hope that I was able to support you as well as your classmate, and I wish you much success as yo...
