The specific sections of the World Forum Foundation (2017) that are relevant to my current professional development are the Special Needs and Men in Early Childhood Education ones.  The “Special Needs” section is relevant to my current professional development because I work with many children who have special needs, and I am always looking to improve my craft in regards to how to better accommodate and instruct them.  Furthermore, the “Men in Early Childhood Education” section is relevant to my current professional development because there are not enough men in the profession.  However, when it comes to the section of “Men in Early Childhood Education,” I have a new perspective on this issue.  For instance, throughout my tenure in early childhood education, I have not seen many men in the classroom, for there are typically women who are teaching the children.  The perspective I had to recognize is that this is not the norm throughout the world.  According to the World Forum Foundation (2017), “…educators are all male or as is the case in western societies where early educators are almost exclusively female. It is clear that gender on its own is not the issue; rather it is whenever and wherever there is an imbalance that does not reflect the population and culture, harm happens” (p. 1). This inequality in education occurs in other countries because there are “countries that limit girls’ and women’s access to education or employment opportunities…” (World Forum Foundation, 2017, p. 1).  What can be implied from this statement is that when children do not receive the guidance from both men and women teachers,  then it could  possibly diminish the overall quality of the children’s education, for the children would have a jaded view of the world if they are only learning from one perspective.  Not only does is this issue controversial, the World Forum Foundation (2017) website adds to my understanding of how economists support the early childhood education field.
Moreover, economists support the early childhood field in a variety of ways.  To explain, economists may evaluate how people can contribute to the organization.  Economists may look at the funds that the World Forum Foundation has as a way to promote programs for children that are of high quality.  Also, while exploring the World Forum Foundation website, another trending issue in the early childhood education field is still the lack of diversity.  To demonstrate, according to Carlson, Codopony, Gayleg, and Gilbert’s (2016) article on the World Forum Foundation,
The diversity of our world’s languages and cultures has been rapidly diminishing due to colonial efforts to discourage or even outlaw Indigenous languages and practices, followed by modern media and commerce, instant communications, and the educational and economic need for fluency in dominant languages such as English. (cited in World Forum Foundation, 2017).
Because of these circumstances, the languages of the Indigenous people will be extinct, forcing them to learn English.  Diversity is still an ongoing issue in the early childhood profession because the concept is not fully appreciated and adopted by teachers and other early childhood practitioners.

  1. Teresa,
Thank you for your post! I think having a balance of male and female educators throughout a child's educational career is important as well. Throughout my own teaching career, I have especially noticed an imbalance in male teachers in the early elementary classrooms. Why do you think this is? And more importantly, how can we change this?

  2. Teresa, Thank you for your post. I am a guy in the field of ECH and I to feel that there could always be more men involved in the field.

    1. Teresa,

I know agree with your post. I have worked in the EC field for years and there were always a limited amount of men involved. I think having more male role models in the field of EC would be a plus.

  3. Thank you for your post. I am interested on what you are doing with the special needs children. And I am asking myself as the professional, should we put "label" on the children, who needs special attention?
